cinnamon french toast

french toast is one of my top-five, maybe even top-three, picks for Sunday brunch – it’s easy-to-make and so satisfying. plus I’m a huge fan of any meal that you can find an excuse to eat with homemade whipped cream. toppings are up to you; I like to top with fresh strawberries, whipped cream, maple syrup, and a little powdered sugar. enjoy!

what you’ll need:

french toast:

  • 8 slices of bread (I used day-old artisan bread baked by Eataly, cut into thick slices
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or 2%, if you’d prefer)
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • powdered sugar
  • butter

cinnamon-vanilla whipped cream:

  • quarter-pint heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

how to make it:

french toast:

  • in a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon until mixed
  • heat butter (I use about 1/6 of a stick) in a frying pan until melted
  • saturate each slice of bread in egg mixture
  • fry bread on medium heat until golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through
  • serve hot

cinnamon-vanilla whipped cream:

  • in mixing bowl, whisk together heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until fluffy
  • serve immediately
